What former IBF Cruiserweight Champion James Toney failed to achieve over MMA fighter Randy Couture, the former boxing world champion Ricardo Mayorga had it on a high note.
Last Friday, the boxer made his MMA debut at Omega MMA’s Battle of the Americas and went to win over unheralded Wesley Tiffer. The boxer was expected to debut inside the octagon last May 2010 against UFC veteran MMA fighter Din Thomas. However that match never made it as the North Carolina Boxing Authority shut down the promotion.
Against Tiffer, the boxer managed to shut down the MMA fighter’s attempt of grappling, but in a bizarre twist, Mayorga hit Tiffer with what appeared to be an illegal knee to the spine, which the referee failed to call. But before the third round, the cage physician saw Tiffer unfit to continue prompting officials to award the fight to Mayorga.
